Each region in Yemen offers its own distinctive architecture and culture. As for Sana’a. it is well known for buildings constructed of brown brick or stone blocks which are accentuated with whitewashed decorative cornices and embellished with geometrical designs.
The most eye-catching feature of this building style is their high arched windows decorated with colorful stained glass panels. In the sunlight, the startling contrast of the brown bricks and whitewashed windows is eye-catching, but an evening stroll in Sana’a’s old city will take your breath away as the stained glass windows sparkle in the darkness like a multicolored jewel. Another distinctive feature of Old Sana’a is that it is completely paved with stone blocks. Smoothed down by many feet, their golden bronze color harmonizes with the brick buildings, giving an impression that has always unique to Sana’a. As for the Sa’ila, during the dry season, no new tourist to Yemen would be able to guess its purpose. But during the rainy season, this seemingly unpretentious road gushes full with the water collected from the paved surface of Old Sana’a, forming an impromptu river - a joyous occasion for adults and children alike. Indeed, this is but a small taste of Sana’a.
