I asked the school the question about the internet and apparently in your room there is none, however you can connect to the internet with your laptop in the school.

as for the other questions, I have no idea, but am curious for the answers :") !

Sorry, no internet in your room unless you are willing to pay to have it installed. See my reply in this thread http://sialyemen.com/forum/index.php/topic,53.0.html

The electrical outlet is as same as in Europe. Two round pins, and 220V. Sometimes you see an odd British style plug (three flat pins), but you can always find adapters here.

The customs don't care about what personal items you bring with you as long as you don't come in with 1000 gold watches or digital cameras.

Linda,

is there anything you wished you'd have brought to Yemen but didn't think of until after you arrived ??

As for computer and internet again : Would you recommend bringing my own laptop or rather not?  If I do, is there a wireless connection possible in the school?

Can't think of any. A couple of times in the past year I asked my friends to ship a couple of boxes to me and they arrived after a week or no. I really miss Häagen-Dazs ice cream, but couldn't bring that here.  :P

If you are going to be here for more than two weeks, I would recommend bringing your laptop. Most internet cafes let you connect your laptop. In addition to using the internet, you can listen to the audio and watch DVDs of your lessons. The school has CDs and DVDs available for various books and lessons, for example, Kitaab Al Kitaab. Sorry, no wireless connection in the school.

If someone is coming from USA, please bring lots of gummy bears, please. This is very important. Smiley

I don't know what your opinion is regarding purifying water, but I understand you can drink from the tap here. I have eaten with several people in their homes and at restaurants for the past 2 weeks I've been here without getting sick, alhamdu Allah. However, I brought a water purifyer (like a Brita or Pur pitcher) and I'm happy with it, though I wish it had a lid for the pour spout. It can get very dusty here...usually I have to wipe my desk every day. I know at least one of the students buys his own water from a local shop.

Also, don't get one of those 220 to 120 converter thingys. Just get an adapter. Most computers, cell phones, etc can use either voltage.

I brought a computer and am planning on getting internet installed in the dorm. There is no wifi access anywhere around the dorm, to my knowledge. And just keep in mind the internet at the school is really patchy. Maybe things will improve, but it is often not functional.

Also, if somebody is coming here very soon (today is March 5), please contact me about possibly bringing a DSL modem with you. I'd pay you for it, but looking for something cheap. (10 euros?)

I can't think of anything else to add.

grace and salaam-

salaam u alaikum rahmatullahi wa barakatu,
my name is Patrick Miller though i ususaly go by Omar,
My wife and i are inshaAllah coming to yemen for school in mid april the exact day we have not decided. My wifes name is Majeda though she will not be attending school (she is a native speaker) she is wanting to get to know the english speaking women at the school so she doesnt forget the english she has learned in the USA. Inshallah if someone could give me a range for the rent and utilities for a good apartment. I beleive that traditional hammam would be best from expereance living in Jordan where water is rationed the western ones use a lot of water. It would also be nice to find one close to a masjid.
about how much is furnature in Sanaa?

Ok, folks are still reading this post and showing up with enormous bags of gummy bears. I should mention that these were not for me! I think the recipient has had enough gummy bears to last her awhile. Smiley

OK ok, the gummy bears are for me. I miss them and all my Yemeni friends like them too. So if you feel a sudden urge to pack a few bags of gummy bears to Yemen, I sure wouldn't refuse. Tongue  They are hugely popular with the teachers since there is nothing like gummy bears in Yemen, very odd considering how much junk food is available here.
