I will be in Yemen in about a week. Does anyone know what options are available for high-speed internet access? I am interested in DSL/Cable internet in my dorm room. Is that possible? How much would it cost? Would DSL in Yemen be as fast as DSL in other western countries?
You can have DSL installed at the student house. I don't know the exact installation cost, but it'll be between $100 and $200. Then you pay 6000YR ($30) per month and get about 4 hours everyday. If your usage goes over that, you'll pay extra. I have the phone numbers of the installers and I'll give them to you when you get here. You may ask the students in the house to see if they wan to chip in to get DSL installed. The speed is not as fast as in the US, but reasonable. You can use Skype without any problems.
Also, do internet cafes offer unlimited plans? How much would one cost? And again, how do they compare in speed?
Not that I know of. You pay every time you use it. The average price now is 60YR to 120YR /hour depending on location and the time of usage. It is usually more expensive at night when the internet cafes are packed with young guys watching porno movies.
